Ten hopeful bands took the stage on Friday July 13 to contest Panorama championships as the final weekend of Saint Lucia carnival 2012, got underway. In a repeat of last year’s results steel bands from Babonneau won both the small and big band categories contested that evening.
After five hours of competition, Courts Babonneau Steel Orchestra emerged Big Band Champions with 443 points. Pantime Steel Orchestra accumulated 431 pts to seize second place. Diamond Steel Orchestra secured third place with 429 pts. Also delivering rousing performances in the big band category were Assumption Youth Knights in Action and North Stars Steel Orchestra. Busta Emerald Steel pulled out of the competition.
Small Band Champions with 402 pts are Harmonites Steel Orchestra. 1st runner up with 364pts, is St. Lucy’s Steel Orchestra. 2nd Runner up with 344 pts is Pan Exodus. Other small band competitors were New Generation Steel Orchestra and Pan Ambassadors.
Full of energy and hype, the bands each performed one song, in a departure from the two pieces of previous years.
However what was not changed was the extreme length of time between bands, leaving MCs to struggle to fill in the gaps. The show started late as organisers waited for the audience to fill the seats of the Beausejour Cricket Grounds. Results were announced just after 2a.m. to diehard pan fans at the BCG.
