Piton Soca Starz Finals Set

The third annual Piton Soca Starz which kicked off on Friday May 18, 2012, is expected to come to an exciting climax next Saturday June 30th, 2012. Original slated for Friday June 29, the event had to be moved to the following day to avoid clashing with the national power soca monarch preliminaries slated for June 29th. The Piton Soca Starz finals will be held at the WLBL car park in Vieux Fort.

Rohan Lovence the Piton Brand Manager says he is confident that the finalists chosen represents a good crop of performers from the preliminaries and expects that they will put on a great show next Saturday. The ten finalists, plus three wild cards were chosen after nine rounds of preliminary competitions held around the island plus two semi-finals.

The second semi-final round was held last Friday during the popular Piton Party in the Yard Sans Souci. And although the event was posed with certain challenges due to poor sound quality, thirteen semi-finalists presented their performances to the mammoth crowd and judges which included guest judge Sherwin Winchester out of Trinidad and Tobago. The finalists have since been chosen following the two semi-finals; the first held in Vieux Fort on June 8 and the second last Friday.

The finalists are Roxie, J Budz, Soca Psycho, Lime Juice, General Bakes, D’Sean, Merle, Small Fries, Blick Productions and Soca Bandit. In addition there are there are the three judges and brand manager wildcards which include Jaw Bone, Mighty and Subance making it a total of 13 finalists.

For the competition the performers are expected to perform two songs, the first of their choice and the second along with an established Soca performer here.

The 2012 Piton Soca Starz winner will receive EC$3,000, a recording contract and a music video produced by TEMPO a value of more than EC$10,000.

Piton Soca Starz was initiated by WLBL the parent company of Piton Beer in 2010 and is a Soca singing competition open to residence and nationals of Saint Lucia between the ages of 18- 35. Participants should not have reached the highest level of any previous competition in the national Calypso, Groovy Soca or power Soca competitions or presently be holding any other winning titles in any other song competition local, regional or international. Performers who have taken part previously however, are allowed to participate again.

In 2011 Piton Soca Starz was won by Sergia who this year is riding a wave of popularity with her two songs “Doh Tell Me Nuttin,”  and “Why You Let Me Go.”
