Hon. Emma Hippolyte returned to the island on Tuesday June 05, 2012, from a five day trip to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada (May 31 to June 4) where she attended the 75th Annual Conference of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and Municipal Expo.
The purpose of the visit was for delegates of the Caribbean Local Economic Development programme (CARILED) – soon to be launched here in St. Lucia – to share and exchange experiences, exemplary practices and know-how with professionals working in communities across Canada and abroad. In addition to introductions to FCM’s broad range of Canada-wide services and membership, CARILED delegates were exposed to FCM International’s other current Local Economic Development (LED) programmes around the globe.
Other participants from the Region included:
(1) Hon. Gloria Shillingford, Minister, Ministry of Community Development (Dominica)
(2) Her Worship Brenda Ramsay, Mayor of Mandeville (Jamaica)
(3) Hon. Ganga Persaud, Minister, Ministry of Local Government & Regional Development (Guyana)
(4) Mr. Kemchan Ramdath, Minister’s Advisor, Ministry of Local Government (Trinidad and Tobago)
While in Canada, Hon. Hippolyte visited the St. Lucia embassy in Toronto and met with the new Counselor General Michael Willius. She also met with some St. Lucians living in Toronto and had the good fortune to meet with Hon. Jean Augustine, C.P., C.M., Fairness Commissioner of Canada and the first black woman to serve in Canada’s Parliament. Hon. Augustine was born in Grenada.
