We are not Trying to Save the Earth

Standard

We lit our candles on December 12, joining in an international statement that coincided with St. Lucia’s National Day Festival of Lights celebration. Experts agree that without a tidal wave of public pressure for a deal, the Copenhagen summit will not stop catastrophic global warming of 2 degrees. While we were few, just like the small nations like ours that will suffer most from climate change, we hope our voices make a difference.

This photo along with thousands of others was presented at climate talks in Copenhagen on December 13, to demonstrate that people in small nations are concerned about climate change and want the more developed countries that are responsible for the most greenhouse gas emissions, to make a real commitment for change. Our Prime Ministers and other representative spent thousands of tax payer dollars to go to Copenhagen, add your voice to the many calling for real representation, real change.

Every phone call, email and conversation adds to the pressure that leaders are feeling to make a binding agreement to cut greenhouse gas emissions and support developing nations in restricting their output and dealing with the current and future effects of climate change.

Pressuring government to keep their promises and keep pushing our agenda is one pillar of making a difference. We must all make an effort to inform each other, to register our voices where they can be heard on the world stage and to take actions that will speak to generations.

Every action counts, if we each do one thing every day, the effect can be phenomenal! Use less water and less energy, create less garbage and carbon emissions. Whether it is choosing to leave that one disposable plastic bottle of water on the supermarket shelf, deciding to reuse your plastic bags, buying a more fuel efficient car or adding solar to your energy options, just act.

Just as important as your actions are your words, so share. Let your family, friends, colleagues and even strangers in on the secret, “We are not trying to save the earth, we are trying to ensure humanity can continue to inhabit the earth.”

You don’t know you have succeeded until you have tried.
